The year 2022 was an eventful year for CARPO – both positively and negatively. We began the year with full steam, taking advantage of the increasingly easing travel restrictions that had impacted our work during the Corona years. In mid-2022, we received a very distinguished visitor at our premises in Bonn: Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock joined us for a roundtable on conflict prevention, peace promotion and stabilization. For a small and still young organization like ours, this was an important recognition! Only three months later, however, we found ourselves in the midst of a massive defamation campaign. This Annual Report covers these events. Most importantly, however, it shows that despite all challenges, we continued to implement our projects successfully and put out a series of publications.
Annual Report 2020/21
After years of solid growth and development in a reasonable pace for an organization like CARPO, the Corona years of 2020 and 2021 were a challenging time for us. We put our focus on keeping our various projects operational and maintaining the size of our team – successfully so. This Annual Report covers the projects implemented during those two years as well as our efforts of mitigating the impact of COVID-19 on our initiatives, which are often based on bringing people into dialogue in the framework of personal encounters.
Annual Report 2019
Beginning of December 2019, CARPO celebrated its fifth anniversary. So in addition to a look back at our activities of the past year, in this Annual Report we will also reflect on five years of CARPO’s existence. And we do look back in pride on our evolution since we first set out! When we, the members of CARPO’s Executive Board, decided to establish Germany’s first Middle East-focused think tank, the type of projects we had in mind then are exactly what we are implementing today: result-oriented contributions to debates on the Middle East in Europe and beyond. From the onset, we have dedicated our work to enhancing dialogue and knowledge transfer between stakeholders in Europe and the Orient at the nexus of research, consultancy and exchange.
Annual Report 2018
We look back at the year 2018 as yet another year during which we have been able to further consolidate our young organization. We have completed, continued and launched projects in line with the institutional raison d´être laid out in CARPO’s vision and mission. It has been our pleasure to continue our work with partner organizations from Europe and the Middle East, and we are proud to have established new partnerships in the course of 2018. We have carried on setting up dialogue fora to convene interlocutors from Germany, Europe and the Middle East in order to generate knowledge transfer and exchange on topics and issues that are of immediate interest and concern on all sides. We have successfully managed to broaden our network among scholars, policymakers, entrepreneurs and civil society with all of whom we foster research, consultancy and exchange for the sake of better understanding of Middle Eastern developments and dynamics.

The year 2017 was a special one for CARPO: In the course of this year, we have taken significant steps forward in institutionalizing and professionalizing our nascent organization on the basis of our visions and principles. Our vision to conduct independent research and analysis in partnership with experts from the Orient is reflected in all our activities and projects. The idea to work towards a better understanding between Germany, Europe and the Middle East through research, consultation and exchange is a recurring theme throughout our work. The CARPO Annual Report 2017 gives an overview of our activities throughout the year.
