Sign Language in Yemen

news 2. April 2025

This artwork by Aseel Ehab is a product of the German-Yemeni exchange project Science Communication for Social Cohesion and Inclusion in Yemen, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service. It results out of the second year of this project, in which we focused on the topic of communicating on social inclusion in Yemen through art. By showcasing various gestures in Yemeni sign language – and highlighting regional dialects –, it aims to promote openness to communication with people with hearing disabilities in Yemeni society. The signs in the artwork were developed under the guidance of Maysa Ahmed, a Yemeni activist for the rights of people with hearing disabilities.

Next to the pictures displayed here, Aseel also created WhatsApp stickers with the signs displayed in the pictures and an additional one for the word ʿayb, which can be downloaded by clicking on the links.
